The first WDS Asia–-Oceania Conference was held on 27–29 September 2017 at Kyoto University, Japan, hosted by the WDC for Geomagnetism, Kyoto. More than 110 data-related people from 16 countries attended the 2017 Conference with 84 papers (oral and poster) presenting data-oriented initiatives at all scales, from the international level down to individual data repositories. A co-located data-analysis workshop on current space weather phenomena was held on the day before the start of the Conference (26 September 2017) in cooperation with the Asia–Oceania community of the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP). The Conference brought together data practitioners, data repository managers, and data-oriented researchers to identify data issues and discuss a plan to help strengthen data activities and build a platform to connect this al activity to the international data community. The resulting network was considered valuable also in helping to support other international research programs under ISC, namely, Future Earth, Integrated Research on Disaster Risk, Urban Health and Wellbeing, etc. It was recognized that this network will be further consolidated and grown through collaboration between the WDS and ROAP. In this regard, the Conference was used as an opportunity to assign a contact person from each participating country such that all of the excellent work in Kyoto could continue to be developed. It was also recognized that this was only the start, and further meetings are needed.
