This symposium was planned to be held as a continuation of the previous two WDS Asia-Oceania Conferences held in 2017 and 2015 respectively but covering a much wider scope of current movements toward the Open Science and the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperative, and Reusable) principle in the Data-related communities in the world. The goal of this symposium was to build consensus on various aspects of research data management by all stakeholders in alignment with Open Research policies and initiatives. It will explore new paths for activities significant in promoting interdisciplinary and collaborative research and data reuse under different scientific disciplines based on evidence and feedback from data communities. This symposium was held also as the International Symposium on Data Science 2020 (DSWS2020) of the Joint Support Center for Data Science Research (DS), Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS).

The year 2020 was the 10-year anniversary of the hosting of the WDS International Programme Office by the National Institute of Information and Technology in Tokyo, Japan.  Several talks on this issue were scheduled.  Since the symposium was held online due to restrictions by the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the time-zone restriction, the time schedule of the symposium was inevitably shifted to cover the Asia-Oceania area.  The most timely event was a session to have an opportunity to present contributions on sharing Covid-19, particularly in the Asia-Oceania area.  The total number of participants was 412 from 45 countries (125 from Japan), and the total number of presentations was 72.  The sessions of the symposium were as follows:

  1. Opening Session: Opening Addresses, Keynote Talks, 10 Years Event of the International Programme Office of the World Data System (WDS-IPO)

  2. WDS Members’ Forum 2020

  3. Regional Activities on Data in the Asia & Oceania Area

  4. WDS-ORCID Strategic Workshop

  5. Showcase PID standards/best practices, as well as identify the resulting opportunities and benefits

  6. Sharing of the COVID-19 Data

  7. Forum of Early Career Data Scientists in the Asia & Oceania

  8. Promotion of Multi-Disciplinary Data Analysis
